Mizuki Nakazawa
OVERVIEW
Born in Kanagawa in 1995. Completed the Doctoral Program in Sculpture at Tokyo University of the Arts in 2024. Currently based in Saitama.
Nakazawa creates wooden sculptures with human bodies as motifs. The artist combines different techniques and materials, such as layering reliefs on carved surfaces and incorporating ceramics or synthetic hair into wood. This form of expression stems from a desire not to fix images that arise during the sculpture-making process.
She feels that “the environment and history exist prior to one’s existence, and from the moment of birth, one is connected to vast time and space, depending on them for existence.” From this connection, she aims to express the sensory link between oneself and the environment and the accompanying uncertainty of existence as a more universal concept through tangible sculptures.
Simultaneously, this creation process can be seen as an attempt to transcend the predetermined framework of the world, arising from the phenomenon within the sculpture that differs from reality.
