Saya Mimura -Charm-

October 11 -November 2, 2024

N project

N project is pleased to present “Charm,” a solo exhibition by Saya Mimura, from October 11 to November 2, 2024.

Saya Mimura, born in Mie Prefecture in 1997, graduated from the Master’s Program of Arts Major at Kyoto University of the Arts in 2022. She currently lives and works in Mie Prefecture.

Mimura’s art is based on her stock of photographs and drawings of everyday, casual scenes or places that catch her eye. She captures the intangible factors that exist in real space, such as temperature, smell, and the flicker of light, and uses these “ephemeral moments or scenes” as motifs for her silkscreen prints and paintings. In modern life, it’s easy to document and archive scenes and moments as images or videos. However, we can’t say for sure that the digital record is the same as the memory of an actual experience. For artists, the act of drawing or painting is a means of holding onto those sparkling sensations that linger in their memories, that are intangible and can’t be captured as data.

In this exhibition titled “Charm,” 13 pieces including Mimura’s latest works will be displayed.

Artist’s Statement

I once visited a remote island. Sparkling rocks, shells and pieces of something were scattered on the shore of a beautiful sea. Nearly blinded by the sunlight reflecting off the white sand beach, amazed by the unfamiliar clear blue of the sea, enveloped in humid air, and with the sound of the waves echoing in my ears, I stumbled upon a beautiful piece that stirred my heart and made me want to take it home. But it was prohibited to take anything off the island for the purpose of sustaining the environment. So the least I could do was take a picture of it with my phone. But the picture didn’t do justice to the beautiful object. I wondered how much of the essence of its beauty my cell phone camera could’ve captured and suddenly felt pulled back to reality.

Not only on special occasions, but I find myself repeating similar experiences in everyday life. My attention would be focused on a small phenomenon, and I’d think about the space and the preciousness of the time in which it is involved. This is an act of both escaping and confronting a reality that I often find irrational and in which I feel powerless. The phenomenon, which is composed of both tangible and intangible factors and created unintentionally, and me/you, who is/are part of this phenomenon, can both become the same existence as that one moment on the beach.
I create paintings to make this existence tangible. Driven by a sense of panic at the loss of sensation, I strive to express this intangible existence, almost like the fragrance of bubbles that can’t be touched, with lines, layers of color and matière (texture).
If I can create a moment that allows the mundane existence to have meaning, I believe that such existence will gain the potential to make an impact in the real world.
