Mariko Fujimoto, Tatsuya Matsushita -BREATH-

June 7 - July 18, 2025

N project

N project is pleased to present BREATH, a two-person exhibition featuring New York–based artists Mariko Fujimoto and Tatsuya Matsushita, on view from June 7 through July 18, 2025.

Both artists are active members of the production team at MATSUYAMA STUDIO in Brooklyn, while continuing to pursue their individual artistic practices and exhibiting their work in both local and international contexts.

Mariko Fujimoto (b. 1991, Tokyo) graduated from Tama Art University in 2014 and later relocated to New York, where she continues to live and work. Her practice centers on transforming scenes from everyday life through the lens of dreams, memory, and literature. By adopting a diaristic approach, Fujimoto evokes a sense of nostalgia and fragmented emotion, interweaving personal narratives with cross-cultural experience. Her work reflects both a deep connection to her roots and a heightened awareness of her surroundings, shaped by the dislocation and discovery of life abroad.

Tatsuya Matsushita (b. 1982, Aichi) graduated from Tokyo University of the Arts in 2006 and was based in Tokyo before moving to New York in 2022. His work investigates the rhythms and structures of the urban landscape through what he describes as “organic geometry.” Drawing from the lineage of Japanese modern art, Matsushita explores the interplay between body and spirit within the spatial logic of the city. In his paintings, grids of windows, streets, and buildings pulse with life, suggesting a metropolis as a single, breathing organism.

Through BREATH, the artists bring together contrasting yet complementary perspectives – internal and external, static and dynamic, nostalgic and vital. The exhibition invites viewers to engage with the emotional undercurrents embedded in the city’s architecture and atmosphere, and to reflect on their own personal narratives in dialogue with the urban experience.
