Tsukasa Kanawa, Takura Suzuki -Where Time Stands Still-

November 22 -December 19, 2024

N project

N project is pleased to present a two-person exhibition, ‘Where Time Stands Still,’ featuring Tsukasa Kanawa and Takura Suzuki, from November 22 to December 19, 2024.

Tsukasa Kanawa and Takura Suzuki both work as painting staff at MATSUYAMA STUDIO in Brooklyn, New York, while also producing and exhibiting their own work as New York-based artists. Recently, they’ve begun to expand their activities in their native Japan, beginning with the group exhibition, “Field of Flux,” held in September 2023, by five Japanese artists from MATSUYAMA STUDIO. The following year, the five artists’ group exhibition was also held at the Hirosaki Museum of Contemporary Art (Hirosaki City, Aomori Prefecture), where some of their works were added to the museum’s collection. This two-person exhibition will be both Kanawa’s and Suzuki’s second exhibition at N project.

Tsukasa Kanawa, born in Aichi Prefecture in 1986, moved to New York following his graduation from the Design Department of Nagoya City Industrial Arts High School in 2005. Initially starting out as a graffiti artist, then inspired by the clubbing and dance party culture of house and techno music, Kanawa’s paintings depict the fusion of music and movement with his own experiences. His works strongly reflect the inspiration he draws from music.

Takura Suzuki, born in Tokyo in 1996, received his degree in painting from Indiana University Bloomington in 2019 and his degree in visual arts from Washington University in St. Louis in 2021. He currently lives and works in New York. In today’s society, which is constantly immersed in the world of the Internet through mobile phones, we can now say that the virtual world that digital technology shows us and the real world that our five human senses perceive are two worlds that aren’t contradictory, but closely connected and inseparable. Focusing on the relationship between contemporary digital technology and humans, Suzuki’s works depict the ways in which this relationship shapes today’s society, conveying his worldview through metaphorical means.

The exhibition, entitled “Where Time Stands Still,” features a total of 15 works, including the artists’ latest pieces. Based on the concepts of time that are polar opposites, “moment” and “eternity,” these works explore space and time from each artist’s perspective. Kanawa depicts the moment when sound and light intersect in a given environment, and expresses the feelings that arise from personal experiences, such as memories and emotions, associated with that given moment. Suzuki portrays the blurred boundaries between the universal, such as cultural norms in a community, and the ephemeral, such as fast-changing trends, in a contemporary society where the digital and material worlds coexist.
